Handmade Cutting Boards and Butcher Blocks by Louis C. Wein
Welcome to my website! After hearing many comments from gourmet friends about the lack of high-quality butcher blocks and cutting boards, I decided to design and produce a line of hand-made products for use in home kitchens. The idea was to make a product that is elegant, extremely durable and functional. Each design is like a small piece of fine furniture that can display well on a kitchen counter and at the dining table. These cutting boards and butcher blocks are heirloom quality. Properly used, they will last for generations.
This is a one-man business so customers must be patient. I personally make each piece to your order, one at a time. I sign each piece.
The process of making these cutting boards draws on classic woodworking techniques. I personally select all the hardwoods to take only the best of what is available. Glues are waterproof and the hand-rubbed finish is food-safe and non-alergenic (no nut oils are used). Grooves will exhibit some unavoidable heat marks from router cutters, but these are sanded to display a hand-finished look. Maintenance is easy. Sponge clean with warm water and soap. After many years of use, knife marks in the cutting surface may be removed by sanding it smooth using 120 grit sandpaper and finish sanding with 320 grit. This should take no more than 10 minutes. As with any wood product, never attempt to clean it in the diswasher.
CUTTING BOARDS
The standard woods used for my cutting boards are hard-rock eastern maple and jatoba (Brazillian cherry), which is extremely hard, and American black walnut. All cutting boards have legs to eliminate the problem of a slab of wood collecting moisture and grinding food particles into counter tops. All round shapes have six legs for stable support. On special order for an extra charge, cutting boards can be made of maple with a choice of cocabola (a rosewood) or teak. Special orders can also be executed in larger sizes and shapes to meet the customer's particular requirements. Large serving boards in various shapes are also available, with or without an edge groove. Also available are one-of-a-kind pieces, which I will post on the site from time to time.
BUTCHER BLOCKS
I make my butcher blocks using eastern maple, ash, black walnut and American cherry placed in an end-grain configurations. The standard butcher block has a band of bubinga or cocabola inlayed on all four vertical faces. The inlay is not a flimsy veneer. It is 3/8 inch thick by 3/4 inch wide. All butcher blocks have five legs (one is in the center) to ensure a totally solid and stable feel. On special order, the "jazz" butcher block is available. These are made with all maple vertical faces to serve as a light field in which playful abstract patterns of exotic woods are inlayed. I design the patterns for each jazz piece and in effect "paint" a picture with woods, such as purple heart, canary and ebony. No veneers are used. All the inlays are from 1/4 inch to 3/8 inch thick. It takes from 20 to 24 hours to produce each jazz butcher block.

I prefer using Postal Priority Mail for insured shipping. I find it is the safest and quickest service for the money. However customers may request insured shipping by UPS standard ground. This is a slower but cheaper option. Shipping costs are stated with each product description and price.
Because I make each piece to order, customers can expect a wait time of two to three weeks. However, depending on order volume, I try to keep several pieces of my basic designs in stock and ready to ship.
Please understand that your order IS NOT subject to cancellation once it it placed. I will, however, accept returns within three business days of receiving a product if it arrives with significant defects. Return shipping is at my expense. In the event of a return, I will issue a full refund including the cost of return shipping.
Customers may e-mail me at lcwein43@comcast.net to check on the status of an order.
